Giants interview Jim Schwartz, two others for defensive coordinator position

The Giants are interviewing a handful of defensive coordinator candidates this weekend as they look to fill their vacancy left by Patrick Graham.

New York interviewed Tennessee Titans senior defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz on Saturday, according to a report SNY NFL Insider Ralph Vacchiano confirmed. They also will speak Saturday with ex-Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Don “Wink” Martindale (2018-21) and former Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Sean Desai (2021), Vacchiano also confirmed, among “four or so others” this weekend for the job, Rapoport said.

Martindale “is a very strong candidate,” according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo. But one thing is clear from the search: the Giants are clearly looking for a veteran to replace Graham.

Schwartz spent the 2021 seasons with the Tennessee Titans as their senior defensive coordinator after spending four years as the Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator from 2016 to 2020, where he won Super Bowl LII over the New England Patriots. Previously he had been the defensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills for a season, and he was the head coach of the Detroit Lions from 2009 to 2013.

Graham, according to a report Friday by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, is leaving the Giants for the same job with the Las Vegas Raiders and new head coach Josh McDaniels.

SNY’s Ralph Vacchiano previously reported that Graham (2020-21) preferred to stay in New York as the Giants’ defensive coordinator under new head coach Brian Daboll rather than become another team’s.

Vacchiano also recently reported, before Daboll’s on-the-record comments at his introductory news conference how he planned to keep Graham, that Martindale was among Daboll’s initial defensive coordinator candidates to watch.

The Giants have also asked the Pittsburgh Steelers for permission to interview their defensive backs coach, Teryl Austin, Vacchiano confirmed.
