French defender Jules Kounde has revealed that he was convinced to join Barcelona over Chelsea after speaking with manager Xavi Hernandez.
The Blues were long-term admirers of Kounde, and they initially tried to sign him from Sevilla during the 2021 summer transfer window.
The club revived their interest in him earlier this summer, but Kounde was lured to Barcelona after a private chat with manager Xavi.
Speaking to L’Equipe, he said: “I spoke with Tuchel and I felt he wanted me to come, but I simply preferred Xavi‘s speech. I have come to a huge club, which has known good times and which, lately, has had less.”
Kounde was a regular central defender during his time at Sevilla, but he has predominantly operated from the right-back role at Barcelona.
The 23-year-old has excelled from the position this campaign with three assists from four appearances and looks a fantastic signing already.
Barcelona are currently second in the La Liga standings with 16 points, two behind Real Madrid, who have made a perfect start after six games.
