Manchester United could make a serious attempt to sign Borussia Dortmund defender Manuel Akanji this summer.
The Switzerland international is regarded as the one of the best ball-playing centre-backs in Bundesliga, but he could pursue a fresh challenge.
Akanji’s current deal with Dortmund expires at the end of next season, and he has yet to be convinced to prolong his stay beyond that period.
The 26-year-old is eyeing an annual wage package of around £10m, but Dortmund are reluctant to offer more than £8m for a renewal.
This could pave the way for his summer exit. United are admirers of the central defender and he is also favourite of interim boss Ralf Rangnick.
Rangnick tried to sign him for Leipzig in the past, and it is reported that the German tactician could lure him to Old Trafford during the summer.
The 63-year-old will step down from his temporary role in May, but will continue to influence transfer dealings as a consultant for the club.
