Trippier off to Newcastle?

Newcastle United are reportedly in pole position to sign former Tottenham Hotspur defender Kieran Trippier next month.

The England international has been with Atletico Madrid since 2019, but he has been regularly linked with a Premier League return.

Manchester United were interested in signing him last summer, but they were put off by Atletico’s demands for the right-back.

The Spanish outfit had just won the La Liga title, and they were reluctant to lose him for less than his £34m release clause.

According to TalkSPORT, the Magpies are now favourites to sign Trippier, and a deal could be finalised in the coming days.

Atletico have softened their stance on Trippier. With just 18 months left on his contract, they are open to selling him for £25m.

The Magpies are expected to spend big next month following their long-awaited takeover from a Saudi-led consortium.

Aside from a right-back, manager Eddie Howe is eyeing a couple of central defenders while a new midfielder is also a priority.
